A Growing City With a Lot of New Concrete
Redmond homeowners call us for epoxy flooring more often each year, and the reason shows in the census numbers. Redmond held at a few thousand people from the 1950s through most of the 1980s. It had 7,163 residents in 1990 and 33,274 in 2020. Between 2000 and 2006 alone it grew by 74.3%. A city that grows that fast pours a lot of garage floors in a short time.
What that means for your garage
If your house went up in the 2000s or later, the slab is probably in good shape structurally. The work is in the prep. We look for:
- A smooth, sealed surface left by the builder that has to be ground off
- Hairline shrinkage cracks, common in slabs poured during busy building years
- Control joints that need to be filled or honored in the coating
- Oil drips and tire marks from the first few years of use
Once those are handled, a new Redmond slab takes a coating very well.
Built on lava
The Horse Lava Tube System enters Redmond at the Redmond Caves, and the same lava flow runs out through Redmond Canyon toward Crooked River Ranch. Shallow rock under a slab can mean uneven support, and that is where cracks tend to show up later. We fill cracks with a rigid repair material before coating and point out any that look like they are still moving.
Weather a little different from Bend
Redmond sits at about 3,012 feet, lower and drier than Bend. Wikipedia's climate table gives it about 8.46 inches of precipitation a year. Winter nights still drop well below freezing, with average annual extreme lows of 5 to 10 below zero. Summer days can reach the upper 90s. Your floor sees dry dust most of the year, then wet slush when storms come through. We match the topcoat to how the garage door gets used. If it stays open on hot afternoons, UV-stable polyaspartic keeps the color from yellowing.
Shops, hangars and work floors
Redmond has a working side. Roberts Field is the only Central Oregon airport with commercial passenger service, and the Redmond Air Center there is a U.S. Forest Service smokejumper and firefighting base. Around that is a mix of light industrial buildings, contractor shops and outbuildings on the edge of town. For those floors we install thicker 100% solids epoxy systems that handle forklift and vehicle traffic, fluids and dropped tools. Line striping and safety colors can go in with the topcoat.
Before the estimate
It helps if you can tell us roughly when the house was built and whether the floor has ever been painted or sealed. Photos of the whole floor, plus any oil stains or cracks, let us plan the visit. If you have an older kit coating that is peeling, leave it in place. We will grind it off on install day.
Owners planning to stay
About 64.5% of Redmond homes are owner-occupied according to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates, and the median owner-occupied value was $462,500. Many of the people we talk to bought in the last decade and want to finish the garage now that the rest of the house is settled. A flake floor is the most common choice for them. It looks clean, hides dirt and holds up to everyday use.

Redmond Questions
Can you coat a shop or hangar floor near Roberts Field?
Yes. For shops and hangars we use thicker commercial systems that resist fuel, hydraulic fluid and heavy rolling loads. We look at the slab first, since older industrial floors often have oil soaked deep into them that has to be dealt with before coating.
My Redmond house is about 15 years old. Is the slab ready for epoxy?
Usually it is close. Most slabs that age need grinding, crack filling and a good degreasing, then they coat well. We check moisture at the estimate to be sure.
